From the Board President

This is a preschool that provides the children with endless opportunities to explore, create, learn, and play.
Roots & Wings fosters a love of learning, as well as curiosity, industry, self-direction, and the ability to know how to learn, not just what to learn.

The colors, textures, themes and materials never stay the same from one week to the next.
You never know what you will find upon entering this amazing place.
Inside the classroom on any given day you may find many of these activities to choose from:

  • A manipulative center with things to count, put together and change
  • Reading area stocked with a wide variety of children's books and magazines
  • An art area for cutting, stamping, taping, painting, molding and constructing
  • Cooking experiences
  • A table inviting children to create with collage materials such as leaves, ribbons, paper, glitter, shapes, wrapping paper
  • Nature and science table celebrating the cycles of the seasons and of life
  • Unit blocks of every shape and size imaginable with accessories and props
  • A dramatic play/housekeeping area that integrates social literacy and other disciplines as it transforms from a travel agency to a
grocery store, or perhaps a huge box soon to be turned into a cave, a tunnel or glow-in-the-dark activity area with books and bone sculptures
  • Painting activities that may experiment with sponges, whisks, marbles, salad spinners or other everyday items
  • Live creatures-in cages of course!
A sensory table with ever changing materials to mix, measure, and explore such as:
  • Dry sand from ancient dinosaur archeological excavations that becomes wet sand the next week
  • Rice, flax or bird seed
  • Soapy water with upside down terra-cotta pots with bubbles rising out of the centers to be channeled through tubes and funnels and finally popping,
    releasing thick dry ice-steam
  • Salt and colored water with chunks of ice to experience cause and effect

Gathering time follows this exploration period where we come together as a community to "wish well" those who can't be with us, read stories, sing, share ideas and have a nutritious snack.

The outdoor environment is an equally enriching experience as the classroom, where they can explore and relax in the nature area or head to the adventure area and enjoy sand and water play, a huge dirt pile, water pumps, forts, climbing structures and versatile swing. This is also the area where the children's social development blossoms as they create imaginative games of hunting for treasures, super heros, pirates, jail, mix "potions", "house", and more.

Families are invited to connect through the year on occasional outings, such as, the pumpkin patch, autumn hikes, the fire station and the Rock Museum.
Sound like fun? It is!

That is the beauty of the program; it makes learning exciting and fun, something often missing from many early childhood programs. And parents are encouraged to volunteer and be a part of the learning process and program experience.

But don't just take our word for it, come in and see for yourself!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Stringer
