Just as a reminder, Roots & Wings will be closed November 23, 24 & 25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday
The Holidays are just around the corner and although we acknowledge them we do not spend a great deal of time or emphasis on them either. The school chooses to keep it pretty low key for many reasons. One, there is no way we could replace family traditions in such a way that could make it any more meaningful than what is provided in the home and with family. Two, holidays are way over done and we see no reason to add to what could be just too much of just too much. Third, it is impossible for children to really relate to these things until they are older and have had many years of experiences with holidays to reflect on. And fourth, not everyone celebrates in the same way or for the same reasons.
A tradition that we enjoy here at school is learning about your family traditions. There will be some sort of small table set up in the hallway in December with paper and pencil for you to write and share your favorite family traditions. I am hoping to create a little handout to share before we break for the holiday.
School Closure due to Weather: Periodically the school will need to close due to snow. One year it was due to flooding…at my house! But that was a long time ago. In the event that Medford schools are closed due to weather conditions, Roots & Wings will also be closed. If Medford schools are on a 2 hour delay start time, Roots & Wings will be closed. The only exception will be for the afternoon sessions in that, if the Medford schools are on a delay start time AND the teachers can get to school THEN Roots & Wings will be open for the afternoon session. During these times I will post a message on the telephone regarding school closure as soon as I can, typically by 7:30 AM. I also try and reach the TV stations and get it posted on our local channels as well. If the Medford schools call a weather emergency and close early, Roots & Wings will do the same. We ask that everyone come as soon as you can to pick up your child. Some of the staff must drive long distances. Because our financial obligations do not change we cannot issue credits on those days. Thank you for understanding.
As we move into the colder weather the outside area will take on a bit of a change. The majority of the water play will be put away for the season and make way for other types of play such as raking, fort building, and construction of various kinds. We are looking for the following items to help us;
Old sheets and blankets
Weather proof cushions
Old, weather proof sleeping bags (you know, the one with the broken zipper that you can't seem to throw out)
Large card board boxes
Tarps and camouflage coverings
Outdoor type fabric (shade cloth)
Other things we can use: Long sleeve shirts and sweaters. We just went through our spare clothing boxes and we don't have very much in this department. We have plenty of everything else. Snow pants and weather proof pants.
We are still enjoying outside play on most days even if it is getting colder and is a bit wetter. Please dress your child for the new weather change. They will probably still get wet. No matter how hard we try they find water in the craziest places! They will even break through ice if they know there is water underneath.
Love,
Teacher Rebecca and Staff
